ITCA Employee Presents SCR Reaction Model at CLEERS Workshop
In October, ITCA employee and model-based design team member Rohil Daya presented at the 2017 CLEERS (Crosscut Lean Exhaust Emissions Reduction Simulation) Workshop in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he detailed an approach to developing physics-based SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) reaction models that involves the development of protocols for reactor tests, construction of global reaction kinetics, and validation against engine dynamometer data.
SCR catalysts are utilized worldwide in automotive applications to reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx). These catalysts rely on the supply of ammonia through DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) to reduce NOx. With efficient control of the DEF supply, overall tailpipe NOx emissions can be reduced significantly, and such control can be enabled by a model-based approach.
Future work will involve utilizing such models in model-based urea dosing calibration and control, along with the addition of sub-models for representation of more real-world aging of the SCR, such as sulfur poisoning.

Celebration of New Plant and FTR Start of Production
On June 13, in coordination with Spartan Motors, Isuzu celebrated the opening of a new assembly plant in Charlotte, Michigan to build its new F-Series truck.
Spartan hosted the ceremony, inviting members of Isuzu’s leadership team, ITCA’s R&D team, local media, and other figures. Isuzu and Spartan executives highlighted the importance of the partnership between the two companies, emphasizing that the new plant signifies an expansion in the relationship between Isuzu and the manufacturer, which currently produces the N-Series and Walk-In Van products.
Development of Isuzu’s new FTR Class 6 truck was led by ITCA and leverages locally-sourced components, representing a new milestone in terms of local ownership in product development.
Spartan has already produced over 40,000 Isuzu N-Series vehicles, and this expansion is also responsible for creating 100 new local jobs.
Start of production began in May and roughly 100 vehicles have already rolled off the line.
